Overview

The urinary tract mucosal lining is the composite tissue layer lining the entirety of the urinary tract—including the bladder, ureters, and renal pelvis—where its most distinctive cellular type is the urothelium. This transitional epithelium consists of basal, intermediate, and umbrella cells, forming a high-resistance barrier that prevents leakage of urine, solutes, and pathogens into the underlying tissues. The apical surface is further protected by a thin glycocalyx composed of glycosaminoglycans and proteins, giving nonspecific defense and anti-adherence properties against infection. The mucosa also hosts immune functions, sensory mechanisms to detect bladder filling, and contributes to water/solute transport. Structural disruption or dysfunction of the mucosal lining is implicated in urinary tract infections, inflammatory conditions, cancer, fibrosis, and can be a site for therapeutic intervention or diagnostic biomarker analysis[1][2][3][4][5][6].
