USP9Y pseudogene 17 (USP9YP17) is a processed pseudogene on the human Y chromosome, derived from the ubiquitin specific peptidase 9, Y-linked (USP9Y) gene, which itself encodes a deubiquitinating enzyme involved in protein turnover and is important for spermatogenesis[7][9]. However, as a pseudogene, USP9YP17 does not encode a functional protein and is generally considered biologically inactive. There is currently no evidence indicating that USP9YP17 contributes to any known physiological process or has clinical significance. It is distinct from the functional USP9Y gene, which is associated with male fertility and ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis[3][5][7][9]. The USP9Y gene is a protein-coding gene involved in sperm production, whose mutations can cause male infertility[3][5]. USP9YP17, in contrast, is a non-functional, non-coding copy (pseudogene), simply named as such due to its sequence homology[7][9]. There are multiple USP9Y pseudogenes annotated on the Y chromosome, with no evidence supporting their expression as proteins or their involvement in disease[4][7][9]. Official gene nomenclature organizations, such as the HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee, list USP9YP17 as a pseudogene, which confirms its non-coding, non-target status[9].
