Overview

UTP15 is a protein-coding gene that encodes a component of the small subunit (SSU) processome, a large ribonucleoprotein complex essential for the biogenesis of the 18S ribosomal RNA, the RNA component of the small ribosomal subunit[1][5]. UTP15 localizes primarily to the nucleolus and fibrillar centers of the nucleus and has RNA binding activity, enabling it to participate in the maturation and processing of pre-ribosomal RNA[1][3]. It is required for optimal transcription and processing of RNA precursors by RNA polymerase I and is part of the early assembly steps of the small ribosomal subunit[1]. Depletion of SSU processome components, including UTP15 homologs in yeast, leads to cell cycle arrest in G1, highlighting its role in linking ribosome production to cellular growth and proliferation[4].
