Uveoscleral Outflow

Molecular classification
Physiological pathway
01

Overview

Uveoscleral outflow is a physiological pathway for the drainage of aqueous humor from the anterior chamber of the eye, distinct from the conventional trabecular meshwork route. Aqueous humor passes from the anterior chamber through spaces between longitudinal muscle bundles of the ciliary body into the suprachoroidal space, and then traverses through the sclera, exiting via perivascular spaces and other routes. This pathway is a therapeutic target for glaucoma, particularly with prostaglandin analogs that enhance outflow by modifying the ciliary muscle extracellular matrix. Uveoscleral outflow decreases with age and is modulated by ciliary muscle tone and certain pharmacological agents.
