Uveoscleral Outflow Pathway

Molecular classification
Physiological Pathway, Fluid Drainage System
01

Overview

The uveoscleral outflow pathway is a physiological route for the drainage of aqueous humor from the anterior chamber of the eye, distinct from the conventional trabecular meshwork pathway. It involves fluid seeping through, around, and between various ocular tissues, eventually reaching lymphatic vessels. It accounts for approximately 5–30% of total aqueous humor drainage and is a key target for glaucoma therapies, particularly prostaglandin analogs, which enhance outflow by remodeling the extracellular matrix within the ciliary muscle and sclera.

Mechanism of action

ECM remodeling in ciliary muscle/sclera via FP receptor (Prostaglandins); Ciliary muscle relaxation (Atropine); Ciliary muscle contraction (Pilocarpine); β2 adrenergic stimulation (Epinephrine)
