Overview

VAC14 antisense RNA 1 (VAC14-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA produced from the antisense strand at the VAC14 locus on chromosome 16 (chr16:70755035-70773251 in GRCh38/hg38). As an antisense lncRNA, its main molecular function is likely the regulation of VAC14 gene expression through complementary base-pairing and formation of RNA duplexes, potentially modulating the translation or stability of VAC14 mRNA. There are links between this regulatory network and neurodevelopmental disorders, notably striatonigral degeneration and possibly certain cancer susceptibilities, but direct functional data and therapeutic relevance for VAC14-AS1 itself remain limited. VAC14-AS1 is not a protein-coding gene; it does not encode a receptor or enzyme and thus is not considered a conventional therapeutic target. If more structural/functional data are required, specification of the VAC14 protein itself—an important scaffold in the phosphoinositide metabolism pathway—would be relevant, but VAC14-AS1 specifically refers to the antisense lncRNA at this locus.
