A vaccine antigen is the specific molecule, often a protein or polysaccharide, within a vaccine that mimics a part of a pathogen and stimulates the immune system to mount a protective response without causing disease. Antigens may be derived from killed or inactivated pathogens, purified or recombinant proteins, polysaccharides, or inactivated toxins ("toxoids"). Newer vaccine platforms use genetic material (DNA or mRNA) to produce antigens in the body rather than delivering the antigen itself. Vaccine antigens form the basis for immunological memory, enabling protection against future exposures to the disease-causing organism.
