V-type proton ATPases (V-ATPases) are large, multisubunit enzyme complexes that function as ATP-driven proton pumps. They are found in the membranes of various intracellular organelles and, in some specialized cells, at the plasma membrane. Their primary role is to acidify compartments within eukaryotic cells by translocating protons (H⁺ ions) across membranes using energy derived from ATP hydrolysis. Mutations or dysregulation in specific V‑ATPase subunit isoforms have been linked to diseases.
