Overview

V-type proton ATPases (V-ATPases) are large, multisubunit enzyme complexes that function as ATP-driven proton pumps. They are found in the membranes of various intracellular organelles and, in some specialized cells, at the plasma membrane. Their primary role is to acidify compartments by translocating protons (H⁺ ions) across biological membranes using energy derived from ATP hydrolysis. Dysfunction or mutations in specific subunit isoforms have been linked to human diseases.
