Vacuolar-type H⁺-translocating adenosine triphosphatase (V-ATPase)

Target
V-ATPase
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Transporter, ATP-driven proton pump
01

Overview

Vacuolar ATPases (V-ATPases) are large, multi-subunit enzyme complexes that function as ATP-dependent proton pumps. They are responsible for acidifying intracellular compartments and, in certain specialized cells, the extracellular environment by transporting protons (H⁺ ions) across membranes. V-ATPases play essential roles in processes such as protein degradation, receptor-mediated endocytosis, neurotransmitter loading into synaptic vesicles, and bone resorption. Dysregulation has been linked to cancer progression and drug resistance.
