Vacuolar-type proton ATPase (V-ATPase) is a large, multi-subunit enzyme complex found in the membranes of eukaryotic cells. It functions as an ATP-driven proton pump, transporting protons (H⁺ ions) across intracellular and plasma membranes to acidify various organelles and, in some cases, the extracellular environment. This acidification is essential for numerous cellular processes including protein degradation, receptor-ligand dissociation, vesicular trafficking, and maintenance of pH homeostasis.
