The vagal afferent nerve refers to the sensory fibers of the vagus nerve (cranial nerve X) that transmit information from visceral organs—including the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and lungs—to the central nervous system. These nerves are a critical component of reflex circuits, such as those coordinating gastro-pulmonary responses, and play a key role in homeostatic regulation by relaying mechanical, chemical, and nociceptive signals.
