Vagal Sensory Nerve Fibers (N/A)

Target
N/A
Molecular classification
Sensory Neuron, Afferent Nerve Fiber, Cranial Nerve Component
01

Overview

Vagal sensory nerve fibers are the afferent components of the vagus nerve (cranial nerve X), responsible for transmitting sensory information from visceral organs (heart, lungs, GI tract, etc.) to the central nervous system. These fibers play a critical role in autonomic regulation, interoception, and mediating reflexes that control heart rate, digestion, breathing, and immune responses. The cell bodies of these neurons reside in the nodose and jugular ganglia, and their central projections terminate primarily in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) in the brainstem.
