Overview

Disruption of this balance, or dysbiosis, is a primary driver of diseases such as bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis, and various gastrointestinal disorders (Borges et al., 2014). Therapeutic strategies targeting this system include the use of antibiotics or antifungals to reduce pathogen load, and probiotics to restore beneficial microbial populations and enhance the host's mucosal immunity (Petrova et al., 2015). Additionally, mucosal adhesives and pH-restoring agents are used to stabilize the environment and prevent pathogen attachment. Understanding this ecosystem is vital for developing treatments that modulate the microbiome to improve host health and prevent recurrent infections.
