Overview

Vaginal epithelial cells are the primary cell type forming the lining of the vaginal mucosa. They serve as a physical and immunological barrier, providing the first line of defense against pathogens. These non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelial cells accumulate glycogen under estrogen influence, supporting beneficial lactobacilli and maintaining an acidic pH. Regular exfoliation helps remove pathogens. The epithelial thickness varies with age and hormonal state, with estrogen playing a crucial role in maintaining its health and integrity.
