The **vaginal epithelial tissue**, also known as the vaginal epithelium, forms the innermost lining of the vagina. It consists primarily of nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelial cells arranged in several layers—basal, parabasal, intermediate, and superficial—which provide protection against mechanical stress during intercourse and childbirth while serving as a physical barrier against pathogens. This layer is highly sensitive to estrogen; under its influence, it thickens and accumulates glycogen that supports beneficial lactobacilli responsible for maintaining acidic pH. The permeability allows immune components such as antibodies and white blood cells access to defend against infection. Regular exfoliation helps remove potential pathogens from the lumen. The health status and thickness can be assessed using cytologic indices like VMI; atrophy occurs with declining estrogen levels after menopause or certain medical conditions.
