Its primary biological function is to maintain a protective barrier against pathogens through the production of lactic acid, which maintains an acidic pH, and various antimicrobial peptides like SLPI and elafin. Dysregulation of this environment, known as dysbiosis, is characterized by a loss of Lactobacillus and an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria, leading to chronic inflammation and increased susceptibility to infections such as HIV and HPV, as well as complications like preterm birth and cervical cancer. Therapeutic strategies targeting this microenvironment focus on restoring microbial balance through probiotics, preventing viral entry with microbicides, or modulating localized immune responses to clear persistent infections. Because it represents a multi-component biological system rather than a single molecular entity, it is typically considered a therapeutic niche or biological compartment rather than a discrete drug target.
