The vaginal lumen microenvironment is a complex biological system comprising the vaginal microbiota, host epithelial cells, and cervicovaginal fluid (NIH, 2023). It plays a critical role in reproductive health by maintaining an acidic pH (typically 3.5–4.5) through the production of lactic acid by Lactobacillus species, which inhibits the growth of pathogenic organisms (PubMed, 2021). This microenvironment is dynamic, influenced by hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause (StatPearls, 2023). Disruptions to this balance, known as dysbiosis, are linked to conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and increased susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections (CDC, 2021). Therapeutic interventions often target this environment to restore microbial balance or deliver localized treatments for inflammatory and infectious diseases (Journal of Clinical Medicine, 2022).
