Overview
The vaginal microbiota refers to the community of microorganisms—including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and archaea—that inhabit the mucosal surface of the vagina. This ecosystem is dynamic and varies throughout a woman's life due to hormonal changes, sexual activity, hygiene practices, antibiotic use, and other factors. A healthy vaginal microbiota is typically dominated by Lactobacillus species, which protect against pathogens and maintain a low pH. Dysbiosis, characterized by a decrease in Lactobacillus and an increase in anaerobic bacteria, is associated with various health problems.
