The vaginal microbiome and epithelial mucosa constitute a complex biological system essential for female reproductive health [Ravel et al., 2011]. Dominated primarily by Lactobacillus species in healthy states, this ecosystem maintains an acidic environment (pH < 4.5) through the production of lactic acid, which serves as a primary defense against pathogenic colonization [NIH, 2023]. The epithelial mucosa provides a physical and immunological barrier, interacting with the microbiota to modulate local immune responses and produce antimicrobial peptides [Anderson et al., 2014]. Dysbiosis, characterized by a shift toward high-diversity anaerobic communities, is linked to conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, increased susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections like HIV, and adverse pregnancy outcomes including preterm birth [StatPearls, 2023]. Therapeutic strategies targeting this system include the use of antibiotics to eliminate pathogens and live biotherapeutic products (LBPs), such as Lactobacillus crispatus CTV-05, to restore a healthy, protective microbial state [Cohen et al., 2020].
