Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) refers to strains of the genus *Enterococcus* that have developed resistance to vancomycin, an antibiotic commonly used to treat serious infections. Resistance is primarily mediated by acquired gene clusters that alter the target site for vancomycin within the bacterial cell wall synthesis pathway.
Resistance is mediated by acquired gene clusters (vanA and vanB) that modify peptidoglycan precursors, reducing vancomycin binding affinity.
