Overview

Variable charge X-linked protein 3B (VCX3B) is a member of the variable charge X/Y (VCX/Y) gene family, composed of small, highly charged nuclear proteins with putative bipartite nuclear localization signals. This gene family is expressed exclusively in male germ cells and primarily localized on the Xp22 chromosome region. VCX3B contains multiple tandem repeats and exhibits sequence variability among individuals. The specific functions of VCX3B remain undetermined, but it may play a role in mRNA stability—by analogy to other family members that inhibit mRNA decapping—and possibly in regulating ribosome assembly during spermatogenesis. VCX3B is not considered a classic therapeutic target such as an enzyme, receptor, transporter, or ion channel, and there are no known drugs that directly interact with it. It is listed as associated with select diseases in text-mining and genetic association datasets, but its direct involvement in major pathological processes is not documented.
