Target
None
Molecular classification
Virus, dsDNA virus, Herpesvirus
01

Overview

Varicella zoster virus (VZV), also known as human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3), is a member of the Herpesviridae family and causes two major diseases: varicella (chickenpox) during primary infection and herpes zoster (shingles) upon reactivation from latency. It is a highly contagious, human-restricted DNA virus. After recovery from chickenpox, VZV establishes lifelong latency in sensory nerve ganglia. Reactivation leads to herpes zoster (shingles).

Mechanism of action

Acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir are antiviral drugs that inhibit viral DNA polymerase. Varicella vaccine stimulates an immune response to prevent VZV infection.
