Varicella-zoster virus antigen (Oka strain) (VZV Oka strain antigen)

Target
VZV Oka strain antigen
Molecular classification
Viral antigen, Envelope glycoprotein
01

Overview

The Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) Oka strain is a live, attenuated form of VZV used as the antigen in varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles) vaccines. It induces an immune response, primarily targeting envelope glycoprotein E (gE), leading to protection against VZV infection. Attenuation is achieved through serial cell culture passages, resulting in reduced virulence while maintaining immunogenicity.

Mechanism of action

Stimulates the production of neutralizing antibodies and cell-mediated immunity against VZV upon administration as a live attenuated vaccine. This prevents or mitigates subsequent infection by wild-type VZV.
