Varicella zoster virus glycoprotein E (gE) is a multifunctional, type I membrane glycoprotein encoded by the VZV genome (ORF68). It is the most abundant glycoprotein on the surface of infected cells and within virion envelopes. gE is indispensable for viral replication, cell-to-cell spread, and envelopment, making it essential for VZV viability. It interacts with the insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) receptor and is the sole antigen component in the Shingrix vaccine.
