Overview

"Various cell cycle proteins" is not a canonical target but an umbrella term referring to a large group of proteins that regulate progression through the cell cycle, including cyclins, cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), CDK inhibitors (CKIs), and mitotic checkpoint proteins. Cyclins are regulatory proteins that activate CDKs, enabling progression through different phases of the cell cycle (G1, S, G2, and M phases). CDKs are serine/threonine kinases whose activity depends on binding to specific cyclins. CKIs, such as p16INK4A, p21Cip1, and p27Kip1, modulate cell cycle transitions by inhibiting CDK activity. These proteins are tightly regulated in normal cells but are frequently dysregulated in cancers, leading to uncontrolled proliferation, and as such, have become important therapeutic targets, with several CDK inhibitors now approved for cancer treatment. However, the term "various cell cycle proteins" is too broad, lacks specificity, and should be replaced by explicit protein targets (e.g., Cyclin D1, CDK4, CDK6) when possible.
