Overview

Metabolic enzymes are biological catalysts that govern chemical reactions critical for metabolism, including the breakdown of nutrients, energy production, and biosynthesis of biomolecules. They are classified into several major families according to the type of reaction they catalyze: oxidoreductases, transferases, hydrolases, lyases, isomerases, ligases, and translocases. Dysregulation, mutation, or aberrant expression of metabolic enzymes underlies a broad spectrum of human diseases—including cancer, inherited metabolic disorders, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases. A variety of drugs directly or indirectly target metabolic enzymes. However, due to the essential and widely-conserved roles of many metabolic enzymes (and shared utilization across tissues), therapeutic manipulation often brings substantial safety concerns. "Various metabolic enzymes" is a generic, non-specific term and should be replaced by the specific enzyme of interest for structured analysis.
