Overview

Vascular and tissue repair system refers to a complex network of physiological pathways and molecular cascades responsible for maintaining vascular integrity and regenerating damaged tissues. These systems include the kallikrein-kinin system (KKS), the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), and various growth factor pathways such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta). They play a critical role in responding to injury by regulating inflammation, promoting angiogenesis, and coordinating the recruitment of progenitor cells to sites of damage (Schmaier, 2003). Dysregulation of these systems is a hallmark of chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, and non-healing wounds (Marchesi et al., 2008). While these systems contain numerous individual therapeutic targets, the term itself describes a broad biological process rather than a single druggable molecule (Galiano et al., 2004). Pharmacological intervention typically involves targeting specific receptors or enzymes within these systems, such as the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) or VEGF receptors, to modulate vascular tone and repair (Schmaier, 2003).
