Overview

Vascular calcium in calcified coronary stenosis describes the accumulation of calcium salts (primarily hydroxyapatite) within the vessel wall, especially in the intima and media of coronary arteries with atherosclerotic plaques. This process mimics osteogenic differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells and progresses from microcalcifications (unstable plaques) to extensive sheets or nodules (stable plaques or, rarely, eruptive, unstable nodules). Pathological calcification reduces vessel elasticity, impairs blood flow, and makes interventional procedures technically challenging. Although not a drug target per se, it is an important marker for cardiovascular risk and a focus of procedural strategies in interventional cardiology.
