Overview
Vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) is a type I membrane sialoglycoprotein and a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is predominantly expressed on the surface of endothelial cells after activation by cytokines and mediates adhesion of lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils to vascular endothelium during immune surveillance and inflammation. It plays a role in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory diseases and cancer.
