Overview

Vascular embolization is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure that involves the intentional occlusion of a blood vessel by introducing embolic materials (particles, coils, liquid agents, etc.) via a catheter. The goal is to halt blood flow to a diseased area—commonly tumors or sites of bleeding—causing ischemia and subsequent tissue death or control of hemorrhage. It is widely used in interventional radiology, both for the treatment of malignant and benign tumors ("tumor control"), palliative symptom relief, and emergency bleeding control. Embolization can also be used in combination with chemotherapeutic or radioactive agents to enhance local cytotoxic effects. The "target" in this context is the vascular segment supplying the pathological tissue, rather than a molecular entity[7][8][2][5].
