Vascular endothelium and smooth muscle components refer to the collective cellular and extracellular structures of the blood vessel wall that regulate circulatory hemodynamics. The endothelium is a thin monolayer of cells that acts as a semi-permeable barrier and produces signaling molecules like nitric oxide to induce relaxation of the underlying smooth muscle. Vascular smooth muscle cells maintain structural integrity and control vessel lumen diameter through contraction and relaxation in response to various neural, humoral, and mechanical stimuli.
