Overview

The vascular lumen is the interior cavity of a blood vessel, including arteries, veins, and capillaries[1][5][9]. It is lined by endothelial cells, whose organization and morphology determine the formation and maintenance of the lumen[10][3][2][4]. The main biological role of the vascular lumen is to facilitate the flow and transport of blood and its constituents throughout the body[1][7]. Its structural integrity is essential for circulatory system function; diseases affecting the vessel wall (such as atherosclerosis or inflammation) may lead to lumen narrowing, obstruction, or abnormal remodeling[7][10]. While molecular mechanisms governing lumen formation—such as endothelial cell rearrangement, extracellular matrix interactions, and growth factor signaling—are critical for vascular health, the lumen itself is an anatomical concept, not a discrete protein, receptor, or drug target[3][2][4]. Therefore, it is not considered a direct therapeutic target for pharmaceutical intervention.
