Vata dosha

01

Overview

Vata dosha is a fundamental regulatory principle in Ayurveda, representing the energy of movement and the combination of the elements air and space. It is responsible for governing all biological activity related to motion, including the nervous system's electrical impulses, the movement of blood through the circulatory system, and the process of breathing (NCCIH, 2023). Unlike conventional therapeutic targets such as receptors or enzymes, Vata is a holistic concept used to describe a set of physiological and psychological characteristics rather than a discrete molecular structure. In traditional Indian medicine, an excess or imbalance of Vata is associated with conditions like anxiety, tremors, and constipation (Lad, 2002). Because it is not a protein or gene product, it does not interact with pharmaceutical drugs through standard biochemical pathways and lacks a molecular classification in modern pharmacology. The concept is used primarily for constitutional typing and lifestyle recommendations rather than as a target for modern drug discovery.
