Target intelligence / Profile preview

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus envelope glycoprotein E2 (E2)

Target
E2
Molecular classification
Viral envelope glycoprotein
01

Overview

The Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus envelope glycoprotein E2 is a structural component of the viral envelope, forming heterodimers with E1 that assemble into trimeric spikes on the virion surface. Derived from cleavage of the pE2 precursor (which includes E3), E2 mediates host receptor binding for viral entry, including interactions with LDLRAD3, heparan sulfate, and other receptors, and interacts with the capsid protein during assembly and maturation. It features domains A (receptor binding), B (protects E1 fusion loop), C (host recognition), and a β-ribbon connector, with its C-terminal tail anchoring to the viral membrane and binding capsid.

Other names
pE2 (precursor form)E2 glycoprotein

Mechanism of action

Inhibits viral attachment to host cells; Blocks viral egress; Prevents viral fusion; Competes for receptor binding (e.g., LDLRAD3)

03

Biological functions
