Overview

Venom is a complex biological secretion produced by various animals, including snakes, scorpions, and spiders, primarily for predation or defense (WHO, 2021). It consists of a sophisticated mixture of proteins, peptides, enzymes, and small molecules that target specific physiological systems, such as the nervous, cardiovascular, or hematological systems (NIH, 2023). While venom itself is not a single therapeutic target, its individual components are extensively studied in pharmacology as leads for drug development or as toxins that must be neutralized (PubMed, 2022). Therapeutic intervention typically involves the use of antivenoms, which are purified antibodies designed to bind and neutralize the specific toxins within the venom. In clinical settings, the primary concern is managing the systemic effects of envenomation and the potential for allergic reactions to the treatment (StatPearls, 2023).

Mechanism of action

Antivenoms function through passive immunization, utilizing antibodies or antibody fragments (Fab or F(ab')2) to bind and neutralize specific toxins within the venom mixture, thereby preventing their interaction with physiological targets and facilitating their clearance (StatPearls, 2023).
