Venous blood flow refers to the movement of blood through the venous system, which returns deoxygenated blood from the body's tissues back to the right atrium of the heart[4][3]. Venous flow relies on multiple physiological mechanisms, including a pressure gradient between the peripheral veins and the heart, the action of venous valves to prevent backflow, and the contraction of surrounding skeletal muscles (the "muscle pump")[1][7][4]. Veins are highly compliant, thin-walled, low-pressure vessels, and serve as a blood reservoir, containing a major proportion of the body's blood volume at any time[3][8]. Dysregulation or obstruction of venous flow can contribute to various vascular diseases, including chronic venous insufficiency, deep vein thrombosis, and contribute to cardiovascular pathology.
