The venous endothelium refers to the single layer of endothelial cells that lines the interior surface of veins, forming a critical interface between circulating blood and the vessel wall. These cells exhibit unique structural and functional properties compared to other endothelial subtypes, playing roles in barrier regulation, vascular tone control, hemostasis, immune signaling, angiogenesis, and vascular remodeling. While the venous endothelium itself is not a direct therapeutic target, it is a location where targeted therapies can be delivered to treat diseases like cancer, arteriovenous malformations, inflammatory disorders, and thrombosis by targeting cell surface markers on these endothelial cells.
