Overview

The venous vessel wall is an anatomical structure forming the outer boundary of veins in the vascular system. It is composed of three layers: the tunica intima (endothelial cells and connective tissue), the tunica media (vascular smooth muscle cells and elastic fibers), and the tunica externa/adventitia (connective tissue, vasa vasorum, and nerves)[1][3][9]. The wall supports unidirectional blood flow back to the heart, largely due to the presence of venous valves and the contractility of smooth muscle. Changes or damage in these layers contribute to the pathogenesis of various vascular diseases, notably chronic venous insufficiency and thrombosis[2][3]. The "venous vessel wall" is not a molecular entity but a tissue comprising multiple cell types, matrixes, and structural features. If a specific molecule or receptor within the venous vessel wall is of interest (for example, endothelial nitric oxide synthase or vascular cell adhesion molecule-1), further specification is required for a molecular-targeted entry.
