Overview

The vertebrobasilar artery system is a critical vascular network that supplies oxygenated blood to the posterior regions of the brain, including the brainstem, cerebellum, and occipital lobes (StatPearls, 2023). It is composed of the two vertebral arteries which ascend through the neck and merge at the base of the brain to form the basilar artery (Radiopaedia, 2023). This system is essential for regulating vital autonomic functions, motor coordination, and visual processing. Clinical conditions affecting this system, such as vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) or posterior circulation strokes, often present with symptoms like vertigo, ataxia, and cranial nerve deficits (NIH, 2012). While the vertebrobasilar artery is an anatomical structure rather than a molecular target, it is the focus of various pharmacological interventions aimed at preventing or treating thromboembolic events. These treatments typically involve antiplatelet or anticoagulant agents to ensure adequate blood flow and prevent ischemic damage to the brainstem and cerebellum.
