Overview
Very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL cholesterol) refers to the cholesterol content carried by very low-density lipoproteins (VLDLs), which are lipoprotein particles produced by the liver. VLDLs primarily transport triglycerides from the liver to tissues. High VLDL cholesterol levels are a risk factor for cardiovascular disease due to their contribution to arterial plaque formation.

Mechanism of action
Statins: inhibit cholesterol synthesis, leading to increased LDL receptor expression and decreased VLDL production; Fibrates: activate PPARα, leading to increased lipoprotein lipase activity and decreased triglyceride levels; Niacin: reduces VLDL production; Omega-3 fatty acids: reduce triglyceride levels
