Overview

Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particle metabolism refers to the physiological processes involved in the synthesis, secretion, transformation, and clearance of VLDL particles in the body. VLDLs are triglyceride-rich lipoproteins produced by the liver that transport endogenous triglycerides and cholesterol from the liver to peripheral tissues for energy utilization or storage. After release into circulation, VLDLs are hydrolyzed by lipoprotein lipase at capillary beds—delivering fatty acids—and are progressively converted into intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL) and then low-density lipoproteins (LDL), which are more cholesterol-rich particles implicated in cardiovascular risk[1][2]. Abnormalities in this metabolic pathway contribute significantly to dyslipidemia and increased risk for cardiovascular diseases due to plaque formation within arteries when levels become elevated[1][4][5].
