Vesicle-associated membrane protein 3 (VAMP3) is a member of the SNARE family of vesicular trafficking proteins that mediates the fusion of transport vesicles with target membranes, including those involved in exocytosis and endosomal recycling. It is ubiquitously expressed and plays a critical role in cellular processes such as the exocytosis of inflammatory mediators by mast cells, trafficking and secretion of cytokines by macrophages, recycling of membrane proteins, and supporting the formation and maintenance of pathogen-containing vacuoles in infected cells. VAMP3 is especially important in immune and inflammatory cell function, including mast cell degranulation and phagocyte-mediated pathogen clearance.
