Vesicular Monoamine Transporter (VMAT)

Target
VMAT
Molecular classification
Transporter
01

Overview

The vesicular monoamine transporter (VMAT) is a membrane-embedded transport protein found in the membranes of synaptic vesicles within presynaptic neurons. Its primary function is to transport monoamine neurotransmitters—including dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, epinephrine, and histamine—from the cytosol into storage vesicles. This process enables the regulated release of these neurotransmitters into synapses for neuronal communication.
