Vessel Dilation

Molecular classification
Physiological Process, Homeostatic Mechanism
01

Overview

Vessel dilation, or vasodilation, is a physiological process involving the widening of blood vessels due to the relaxation of smooth muscle cells within their walls. This leads to decreased vascular resistance, increased blood flow, and lower blood pressure. It is regulated by various endogenous mediators and is clinically relevant for treating conditions like hypertension and heart failure. Excessive vasodilation can lead to hypotension and is also observed in pathological conditions like anaphylaxis.
