Overview

The vestibular system is a sensory system located largely within the inner ear, consisting of the semicircular canals (detecting rotational movements), otolithic organs (utricle and saccule; detecting linear acceleration and gravitational forces), hair cells, and associated nerves and nuclei in the central nervous system[1][2][5][6][7]. It provides the body a sense of balance and spatial orientation, allowing for stabilization of vision, coordinated postural responses, and the maintenance of equilibrium and movement. Damage to the system can cause vertigo, imbalance, and impaired eye movement coordination[2][7]. It includes the vestibular labyrinth, vestibular ganglion, vestibulocochlear nerve (cranial nerve VIII), and vestibular nuclei in the brainstem[1][6]. Signals from vestibular sensory organs are integrated with visual and proprioceptive pathways to generate appropriate motor and reflex responses, essential for normal daily functions[1][2][6][7]. Important Note: The vestibular system is an organ system and not a molecule, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or typical drug target. It cannot be listed as a canonical drug target for the purposes of structured biomedical annotation. A more specific molecular entity, such as "vestibular hair cell mechanotransduction channel" or "otolithic organ calcium channel," would be suitable if the intention is to capture therapeutic or mechanistic targets.
