The Vi capsular polysaccharide antigen is a surface-expressed linear polysaccharide unique to Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, the causative agent of typhoid fever. It is a major virulence factor, enabling S. Typhi to evade innate immune responses by inhibiting phagocytosis and reducing complement deposition. It is also an important target for vaccine development; purified Vi antigen is used as a standalone vaccine with moderate efficacy in adults, while conjugation to carrier proteins converts it into a highly effective vaccine across all age groups.
