Target intelligence / Profile preview
Listonella anguillarum serotype O1, more commonly known as Vibrio anguillarum, is a Gram-negative, halophilic bacterium that acts as a primary pathogen in marine and estuarine aquaculture. It is the causative agent of vibriosis, a severe hemorrhagic septicemia that affects a wide range of fish species, including salmonids, eels, and sea bream (Frans et al., 2011). The virulence of this serotype is largely mediated by its sophisticated iron-acquisition systems, such as the pJM1 plasmid-encoded anguibactin, and its ability to adhere to and colonize host mucosal surfaces (Actis et al., 2011). While not a single molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, L. anguillarum O1 is the focus of therapeutic strategies involving broad-spectrum antibiotics and inactivated whole-cell vaccines (Toranzo et al., 2005). These interventions aim to either directly inhibit bacterial growth or prime the host's immune system to recognize and neutralize the pathogen's surface lipopolysaccharides and proteins. Effective management of this pathogen is essential for reducing mortality rates and economic losses in the global fishing and aquaculture sectors.
Antibiotics like florfenicol inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, while vaccines (bacterins) provide protective immunity by exposing the host to inactivated bacterial cells, primarily targeting the O-antigen of the lipopolysaccharide.
