Vibrio cholerae O1 (V. cholerae O1)

Target
V. cholerae O1
Molecular classification
Bacterium, Gram-negative bacterium, Pathogen
01

Overview

Vibrio cholerae O1 is a Gram-negative bacterium responsible for causing epidemic and pandemic cholera. It is characterized by its O1 serogroup antigen and its ability to produce cholera toxin (CT) and toxin-coregulated pilus (TCP), both of which are essential for its virulence. Infection occurs through ingestion of contaminated water or food, leading to severe watery diarrhea and dehydration.
