Target intelligence / Profile preview

Vibrio cholerae O1 and O139 (N/A)

Target
N/A
Molecular classification
Bacterium, Gram-negative bacterium
01

Overview

Vibrio cholerae O1 and O139 are serogroups of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae responsible for epidemic and pandemic cholera in humans. They are differentiated by the structure of their lipopolysaccharide (LPS) O-antigen. Both serogroups produce cholera toxin (CTX), which causes severe watery diarrhea. V. cholerae O139 is encapsulated, unlike V. cholerae O1. Transmission occurs primarily via contaminated water or food.
